About the Master in Epidemiology

The Université d’Abomey-Calavi (UAC), through the Laboratoire d’Epidémiologie des Maladies Chroniques et Neurologiques (LEMACEN), is making available in Benin a research Master’s programme in Epidemiology and Public Health Interventions (MEISP), which focuses on chronic diseases and complements the Master’s courses available in the field of public health in Benin. This Master’s degree is the only research Master’s degree in public health and epidemiology in Benin; the others are professional Master’s degrees. The aim is to optimise the performance of strategies and policies for combating public health problems, especially chronic diseases, by means of trained and competent local players.

Its overall aim is to improve learners’ research and knowledge production skills by acquiring a broad spectrum of knowledge in epidemiology and intervention for disease prevention and control. At the end of the course, students should be able to :

  • Identify public health problems – Design epidemiological research projects ;
  • Conducting epidemiological research projects.
  • Managing health databases ;
  • Planning public health interventions ;
  • Implementing public health interventions;
  • Evaluating public health interventions ;
  • Implement strategies to prevent and control non-communicable diseases (NCDs)

Admission to the master’s programme in epidemiology

Admission to the M EISP is based on an application and interview.

Candidate selection procedure

The number of places available per year in the first year is 30. Applications must be submitted on paper to the secretariat of the Doctoral School of Health Sciences before the start of the academic year for which enrolment is requested, and no later than the application deadline set by the pedagogical management committee. These applications are examined at a session with the applicants by an admissions panel chaired by the chairman of the educational management committee. Authorisation to enrol is granted after selection on the basis of applications by the admissions panel, taking into account the number of places available.

Input profiles

  • Bachelor’s degree (BAC+3) and two years’ professional experience.
  • Professional degree in Public Health and Epidemiological Surveillance ;
  • Professional degree in human sciences: human biology. Biomedical analysis, medical imaging, statistics, nutrition, nursing, economics, etc;
  • Any other diploma recognised as equivalent.
  • Master’s level in general medicine, dentistry and pharmacy (must have completed the equivalent of all semesters S1 to S6 of the Bachelor’s degree and S1 to S2 of the Master’s degree).

  • Two letters of recommendation from teachers at the school attended or from resource persons
  • A 1-2 page study project to be carried out during the MEISP (title, introduction, objectives, expected results)
  • An English level test
  • Certified photocopies of baccalaureate and other diplomas obtained
  • Transcripts of marks from the degree or diploma for which you are applying
  • Three identity photographś colour
  • A legalised birth certificate
  • A legalized certificate of nationalitý
  • Receipts for payment of the application fee (10,000 FCFA for the Doctoral School, 2,000 FCFA for the UAC Rectorate*)
  • A folder with elasticated flaps.
